Implementation of Computer Technology in Preschool

As technology further integrates into everyday life, many teachers now turn to computers to enhance their lesson plans. Computers are appearing even in classrooms for children as young as 3 and 4 years old. When implementing computer technology into a preschool classroom, you must consider certain factors, including physical placement and the software installed on the computer.
  1. Preparation

    • Implementing computer technology in a classroom does not guarantee effective education. The Northwest Educational Technology Consortium recommends setting clear goals on what you want to accomplish by implementing computer use in the classroom. Take into consideration how you plan to use the computers and what needs you want the computers to meet. In addition, NETC reminds that implementing this type of technology requires more than a one-time investment. Maintaining computer technology requires ongoing financial and technical support.

    Computer Placement

    • The physical arrangement of the room, such as the location of the electrical outlets and the network or telephone jacks, often dictates where you place the computers in a preschool classroom. Placing the computers against a wall helps to prevent children from tripping over and pulling out the cables. In addition, placing computers away from sinks, art centers and snack tables helps to prevent personal injury resulting from electrical shock and prevents damage to the equipment.

    Selecting Age-Appropriate Software

    • When selecting software for use in the preschool classroom, you should select programs that are developmentally appropriate for young children. The Northwest Educational Technology Consortium states that programs using sounds, including music and traditional speech, engage children, encourage imagination and promote problem solving. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, teachers should select software programs that follow and complement the curriculum.

    Concerns

    • Although adding computers to a preschool classroom provides many positives, The Northwest Educational Technology Consortium states that relying solely on technology may counteract these benefits. The computer and its software should enhance the preschool education, not replace the teacher. In addition, installing filters on preschool computers used by the children can prevent a child from accidentally viewing inappropriate content online.
