Preschool Computer Math Games

Preschool students are expected to be taught many early math skills before they go to kindergarten. They learn how to count and recognize numbers and how to distinguish between different shapes. By practicing these skills with online computer math games, preschoolers are better prepared to start school.
  1. Learning Numbers

    • Preschool children are learning to count and to recognize the relationship between a group of objects and the number of objects in the group. In this free online game from the Harcourt School website, preschoolers practice matching groups of items and a number given. The game starts with three boxes across the top. Each box holds a different number of items. Under these boxes, students see three more boxes. Each bottom box holds a number. Using their mouse, students click on a box of items, counts them and then clicks on the corresponding number. Once each box of items and the corresponding number has been matched, students are told "Good Job!" and an arrow is presented. When the student clicks on the arrow, they are given a new set of objects and numbers to match.

    Shape Play

    • Young students learn about the different shapes that are in the world. In this game from the Sesame Street website, children see that shapes can be put together to create other shapes. The game begins by showing students two shapes, such as a triangle and a square. Students are told that they will see a child make a pinwheel out of a group of triangles and squares. After seeing the video, the player will get a chance to do the same thing. A shaded pinwheel is given with a variety of colored shapes around it. Preschoolers click and drag the colored shapes over to the shaded ones to make their own pinwheel. Students are then prompted to make many other new shapes with this game.

    Connect the Stars

    • Preschoolers learn to count and recognize numbers in order. This Connect the Stars game from the Knowledge Adventure website allows young students to practice counting to ten. The game begins with a group of stars numbered 1 to 4. Students click on them in order and as they do, a line appears connecting the stars together. More stars appear numbered 5 to 10. When students have connected all 10 stars, a picture appears to let them know that they have finished that set. At this point, a new set of stars comes up for students to connect, providing a new cartoon picture with each group of ten.
