Setting up a Water & Sand Table in an Early Childhood Classroom

If you spend any time with young children, you understand the intrigue of materials like sand and water. Splashing in the water or building a sand castle are important cognitive-skill building activities for young children. Scooping and emptying the materials strengthens the fine motor muscles, while handling the different materials shows how cause and effect differs between sand and water. The set-up of the water and sand table should encourage accessibility and discovery.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the tables on tile or linoleum to make clean up easier. Lay textured rubber or vinyl mats around the perimeter of each table to prevent slipping.

    • 2

Position the table within a few feet of a sink or other water source for easy cleaning and refilling. Transporting buckets of clean water across the room is impractical and unsafe.

    • 3

Attach small hooks along each table or at an age-appropriate level nearby. Use these hooks for hanging smocks that the children can wear to keep from soaking themselves.

    • 4

Secure a plug in the bottom of each table to prevent leaking. Keep a large bowl or storage bin under the table just in case a child pulls the plug while playing.

    • 5

Fill one table with 3 inches of water and one table with 3 inches of sand. Low to medium levels of either sand or water let the children play freely with the materials without making a huge mess.

    • 6

Place three to five toys in each table. Toys like buckets, shovels, toy boats and strainers work well for either the water or sand table. Wash the toys when you change the sand or water.
