What is a Juku School?

Juku is a private after-school program to get ahead or catch up in school or prepare students for university entrance exams. There are around 100,000 cram schools in Japan, with roughly 1 in 3 junior high and high school students attending Juku. Students stay in the Juku for an average of 3 years.

Many private schools in Japan hold special entrance exams that prepare students for further study at high schools or universities. Juku schools provide extra instruction and practice for these exams and can be beneficial for students who want to qualify. These exams are typically multiple choice and can be extremely difficult.

Juku schools exist on a for-profit basis and can be expensive, charging $200-$300 per month. Schools vary in size and resources, but they typically offer small classes with one-on-one attention from teachers, structured coursework, and mock tests.

In Japanese culture, high standards and high expectations for education are paramount, so parents are willing to pay for education to secure a good future for their children.
