How to Create Circles With a Diameter

A circle is a basic shape in geometry. The diameter of a circle is the distance from one edge to the other on a line that crosses the center of the circle. You can create a circle with a tool used to draw circles -- the compass. If you want a specific diameter, you need a ruler as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Halve the diameter to find the radius. For example, if you want a circle with a diameter of 4 inches, take half of 4, or 2 inches.

    • 2

Draw a line that is the length of the radius. In the example, use the ruler to draw a line that is 2 inches long.

    • 3

Place the point of the compass on one of the ends of the line.

    • 4

Rotate the compass with the writing end touching the paper to draw a circle with the desired diameter.
