Kaleidoscope Collage Art Project

Kaleidoscopes offer a source of inspiration for collage art projects. Collages using kaleidoscopes as the theme range from those that use the geometric images produced by kaleidoscopes to projects that use pictures of kaleidoscopes. Such projects can be used to teach lessons on symmetry, the art of collage and the history of the kaleidoscope. There are numerous options for kaleidoscope collages.
  1. Collage of Kaleidoscopes

    • Create a basic collage of kaleidoscopes. Obtain photographs of kaleidoscopes and print copies of them. On a cutting board, cut the printed pictures out along their outlines using a utility knife, which is more useful for intricate areas than scissors. Arrange the pictures on a piece of card-stock or poster board, and glue them in place. If desired, accent the collage using pens, colored pencils, markers and stickers. Frame the collage if you want to display it.

    Kaleidoscope Image Collage

    • Make a kaleidoscope image collage. On a piece of paper draw a hexagon. Draw a line from each point of the hexagon to the middle of the hexagon. Draw a design of geometric shapes with stencils and a pencil in one of the sections. Copy the pattern on the other sections. Cut up pieces of paper to fit the geometric shapes you used. Use a different color for each geometric shape. Glue the pieces of paper in place. Glue the paper to a piece of cardboard. Poke two holes in the top of the cardboard. Loop a string through the holes and tie the ends together. Hang up the collage.

    "Kaleidoscope" Word Fill-In Collage

    • Word fill-in collages are another option. With a pencil draw the word "kaleidoscope" in hollow letters on a piece of card-stock or printer paper. Alternately, instead of "kaleidoscope" draw the three Greek words that were used to create the word kaleidoscope, which are "kalos," "eidos" and "skopein." Once you have drawn the letters on the card-stock or printer paper, gather a selection of colored paper. Rip up your selection into random shapes. Arrange pieces of colored paper to fit within the hollow words. When you have an arrangement that you are pleased with, glue the pieces of paper in place. For an eye-catching extra touch, dab glitter glue onto the collage.

    David Brewster Portrait Collage

    • Learn about Sir David Brewster, the inventor of the kaleidoscope. Gather a selection of pictures taken of Brewster. From these pictures, select one and glue it to a poster board. Then cut up or rip up various colors of paper. Place pieces of this paper over various features of the picture to create a collage portrait of Brewster. Glue them in place. To the left and right of the collage portrait, glue a cutout kaleidoscope picture. If desired, add detail to the portrait with colored pens or pencils.
