Games to Help You Understand Adverbs

Since the English language has only two modifiers, students should be able to distinguish between adjectives and adverbs. Playing games that can help students understand that adverbs tell how, when, where and to what extent about the verbs, adjectives and adverbs they modify will teach them how to use adverbs correctly.
  1. Adverb Alphabet Relay

    • Students will work in teams to write adverbs that begin with each letter of the alphabet in the allotted time. Assign each team space on the board or on a poster or sheet of newsprint. Start a timer. Beginning with the letter "A," students write an adverb that begins with each letter of the alphabet. When one students finishes his word, he must run back to his team and hand off the chalk or marker to the next team member. After everyone is finished, teams share their answers. A team may challenge another team by asking them to use the adverb correctly in a sentence. If the challenged team uses the word incorrectly, or if the challenged word is not an adverb, the challenging team wins the point. If the challenging team is incorrect, they lose a point.

    Name That Adverb

    • Read aloud sentences containing adverbs. Working in teams, students will tell name the adverb in the sentence that you read aloud. When a team answers correctly, the team will receive an extra point if they tell you what word is modified by the adverb. They will receive an additional point if they tell you whether the adverb tells how, when, where or to what extent about the word modified.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Give students a section of newspaper or several newspaper articles. Instruct them to find a specified number of adverbs that tell how, when, where and to what extent, as well as the words modified by the adverbs.

    Adverb Charades

    • Write phrases containing adverbs on index cards, and place the cards in a basket. A student will draw a card from the basket and act out the phrase. The class must guess phrases such as "walk quickly" or "laugh loudly." Continue with the game until all students have had a turn. A variation would be for each student to write and act out an original phrase; the student will explain what the adverb tells about the word it modifies after the class has guessed the phrase.
