The proper way to record a fraction is in its simplest form (most reduced form). There are a few ways to simplify the fraction, but before you can simplify you need to get the fraction in the right format. Use your calculator if you can, or just turn whole numbers with partial fractions, into a solid fraction number (even though it may be an improper fraction).
Next, find the Greatest common denominator, or in other words, the largest number that will divide into both the top and the bottom number (This will make it easier for you as teachers and parents). After you have discovered that number, divide the top and the bottom by the number, and write your simplified fraction!
If this method seems like too much work for you, try dividing the fraction (both numbers) by 2, or 3, and then see if it becomes obvious. Often times you can just continue to divide by 2 or 3 until the fraction is fully simplified!
