Instead of greeting the kids in the same way every day, start the morning meeting with a greeting game. For example, form a big circle and have everyone say hello as quickly as possible, going around the circle. The next day, appoint a leader and have him walk around the circle backward, shaking everyone's hand. On the third day, do a morning ball toss. To do this, throw a ball to a student, saying her name. Have that student throw the ball to the second student, while saying her name, and so on until everyone has had a chance to catch the ball.
Sharing is a great activity for a morning meeting. During "show and tell," students get to bring in something from home, such as a picture, toy, pet (with the teacher's and parent's permission) etc., and talk to the class about it. For a Monday meeting, have the students tell the class about one or two things they did over the weekend.
Story time gets kindergartners into a mellow, receptive mood, starting the day off on the right foot. Read a short picture book each day as part of morning meeting. Alternately, read a chapter from a longer chapter book. You can read the story after greetings and announcements, or first thing as a way to get the children in a mood to listen.
Clapping and singing are great ways to get kindergarten students to quiet down and listen, particularly in the morning. Clap a few simple patterns and have the students clap each pattern back to you. When you stop clapping, they know it is time for silent listening. Alternately, sing a song with the kids. To make things more fun, you can have a different song for each day of the week or teach your students a new song each season.
