Kindergarten Snow & Winter Activities

Snow and winter provide wonderful themes for classroom activities, many ideal for the kindergarten environment. Classic art projects allow your students to show off their creativity while the right story can allow you to share some classic literature with your class. Winter movies provide another opportunity and are traditionally filled with family-oriented, positive themes.
  1. Make Snowflakes

    • Snowflake art is a fun classroom activity and an excellent way to decorate your kindergarten classroom for the winter. Pass out construction paper to each student and show them how to fold and cut their paper to create their own individual snowflakes. Instruct them to decorate their snowflakes. Give your students time to personalize their snowflakes. When finished, affix each snowflake to the wall or to a display board in your classroom. The snowflakes provide a perfect decorative touch to the winter season.

    Winter Reading

    • Winter can be a relaxing time for you to gather your students for a little group reading. Have them move around the room with you at the head of their circle. Select a story with a winter theme, such as the classic story of "Frosty the Snowman" by Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson. Add some of your own favorite snow or winter stories to your reading list and considering making this reading time a regular event in your classroom. Spend a few hours reading to them and let them enjoy a few of your favorite winter-themed classics.

    Snowman Art

    • Snowman art projects can be a single student project or you can have your class work in groups. Instruct your students to use construction paper as the background for their projects. Ask them to draw their snowman and background on the construction paper to form a frame for their work. Use glue and cotton balls to form the snowman. More construction paper and paint or markers are ideal to decorate the background as well as personal effects upon their snowmen. Let your students explore their creativity and display their work around your classroom.

    Winter Movies

    • Winter movies offer a unique atmosphere to the season and tell family-oriented stories, often with a touch of seasonal magic, which your students are sure to love. Select a few of your favorite winter or snow movies and make sure to get the proper approval from your student's parents before viewing the movies in your classroom. Accent the movie day with snacks like popcorn or bring some winter cookies for your class to enjoy.
