Give the kindergarten students spelling word lists that contain five to 10 words. The list should contain primarily two- and three-letter words, with a few four-letter words as well. Some simple words would be if, cat, dog, boy, girl and jump. Let the students work on their lists for a short time in school and ask them to take the lists home, too. Practice the words at school.
Give children magnetic letters and a metal surface and ask them if they can find any words among the letters. Pick simple letters that will easily spell many simple words. This could also be done with ABC blocks, which will have several letters on each blocks. Stamps or Scrabble tiles could be used as well.
Let the kindergarten students play spelling games on the computer, whether the games are installed on the computer or from reputable educational websites. These interactive games feature graphics, sounds and music, as well as colorful characters designed to make learning fun for children. Give the students and their parents a list of approved sites so the children can play at home.
Make spelling words more interesting by letting the children write the words with something far different from a pencil or crayon, such as finger paint or chocolate pudding, or use alphabet pasta. For an outdoor activity, have them write the words in sand or dirt with a stick. If they do this at home, a parent could sign a note and perhaps send a photo.
