Create a word wall and use it as the basis for activities. Write a few words on a chalkboard or chart on the wall, and ensure they are related to something relevant to the students, such as an upcoming holiday, the season or the weather. Identify the letters in each word and sound them out. See if the students can come up with any words that rhyme with the words on the wall. Or, for larger words, ask them to identify smaller words within the large ones.
Sight words are basic words that appear often in books, such as "the," "and" or "it." Create a game of bingo, using sight words on the cards and show the students each word as you draw it from a bag. This will allow them to learn to identify sight words while playing a game and enjoying themselves.
Write the words your class is studying on cards, writing each word twice. Do a variety of sets, such as sight words, or words related to different units you are studying. Have the students take a set and place them face down. They can then turn over the cards, two at a time, to try to find the pairs of words. Repeatedly looking at the cards will help the students learn the words.
On small cards, draw simple pictures of words that the children are learning, such as "cat," "dog" and "car." Also color a few cards in different colors. Write the words for the pictures and colors on different cards. Have the children match the words with the pictures and colors. Change the words and pictures frequently for this game, increasing the difficulty as the children learn more words, and relate the words to other themes you are teaching.
