Winter Games for Kindergartners

Winter can be a wonderful time of year for kindergartners. The sight of snowflakes falling from the sky, a blanket of fresh white snow on the playground and dreams of building the biggest snowman possible often raise students' spirits. When kindergartners are longing to enjoy the magic of the season, play these winter games.
  1. Snowman Games

    • Create 10 snowmen on pieces of 3-by-5-inch white card stock. Vary the number of buttons and the color of scarves for each snowman. Color copy snowmen on white card stock so there are two of each snowman. Have kindergartners use the snowmen to play a matching game. Invite students to play Go Snowman, which is similar to Go Fish except students start off with four cards. Kindergartners describe the snowmen they are seeking by saying, "Do you have a snowman with three buttons and a red scarf?"

    Snowball Forts

    • Place a bag of marshmallows on a table for four students to share. Invite kindergartners to build a snowball fort. They can make the fort as wide or as tall as they would like. After 30 seconds, have students stop. Measure the forts to see who has the tallest fort or the widest fort. Encourage students to count how many marshmallows they used in constructing their forts. Play a few rounds to allow kindergartners to change strategies for building taller or wider forts.

    Winter Olympics

    • Host a classroom Winter Olympics. Invite kindergartners to line up on a starting line in the gym or on the playground. Include events such as snowball shot put using cotton balls, icicle javelin using straws or frozen discus toss using paper plates. After each event, help kindergartners use rulers or tape measures to measure how far their cotton balls, straws or paper plates traveled. Award first-, second- and third-place mitten-shaped paper medals.

    Snowball Relay

    • Divide kindergartners into teams of four. Have two players from each team line up on one end of a room and the other two players from each team line up at the other end of the room. On go, the first player from each team races across the room pushing a Styrofoam snowball or pingpong snowball with a pencil. When players reach teammates, they pass off their snowball and pencil to the next player. Race until all players take a turn.
