Games for Kindergartners Learning How to Read

Kindergarten officially marks the first year of elementary school, and during this year of schooling, children begin learning about the various content areas. One area that is particularly focused on during kindergarten is reading, as reading is a skill that is essential for success in all subject areas, as well as in life in general. Employing games as a means of teaching reading instruction gets kindergarten-aged children interested in the subject and helps them better understand it.
  1. Memory

    • Two students compete to collect pairs of word cards in this reading game. Print out words that you've been working on with your students on two sets of index cards. Place the cards face down on a flat surface. One student at a time flips two cards over and reads what the cards say; if the cards have matching words, the player removes them, but if they don't match, the player flips them back over and the next child takes a turn. The game ends when all cards are removed, and the child with the most cards wins.

    Word Sort

    • This non-competitive game requires children to identify the beginning sounds in different words. Cut out pictures of various items that are familiar to your students, and print the name of the objects directly on the pictures -- cut out several objects that begin with the same letter. Students must read the words and sort them into piles based on the letter they begin with. For example, words that begin with the letter "B" should be in one pile, words that begin with the letter "C" should be in another, and words that begin with the letter "D" should be in yet another pile.

    Reading Race

    • Students race one another in this reading game. Print several different words that you have been working on with your students on index cards. Randomly select two children to begin the game, and these two children stand at the front of the class. Hold up an index card; the first child to read the word printed on the card remains standing while the other child takes his seat and another student takes his place. Continue playing the game until all students have had a turn.

    Collecting Words

    • Kindergarten students collect words that they are able to read in this game. On small pieces of scrap paper, write out a variety of words and place them face down on a flat surface. Students take turns picking up a piece of paper, flipping it over and reading the word written on it. If students are able to read the word on the paper, they keep it; if not, they set it back down and the next child takes a turn. When all the pieces of paper have been removed, players count the number of words they have collected, and the child who has collected the most words wins.
