Kindergarten Graphing Ideas

Graphing with kindergarten children allows you to introduce new math concepts and give kids a chance to share their ideas with the class. Keep graphing activities simple so they are easy for the children to understand. Most kindergarten graphs focus on basic ideas through using a yes-or-no graph, a picture graph, bar graph or basic Venn diagram.
  1. Yes-or-No Graph

    • Yes-or-no graphs allow children to share their opinion on a classroom topic and see which option more kids are in favor of. Draw a "T" chart and write "yes" at the top of one column and "no" at the top of the other. Invite children to write their name or draw a tally line in the column that represents their answer. Some ideas for a kindergarten yes-or-no graph include "Do you like pizza?," "Do you have a pet?" or "Are you 5 years old?"

    Picture Graph

    • Picture graphs let children draw picture representations on their graph. For example, a graph entitled "How do you get to school?" may have columns for school bus, car, bike and walking. Kindergartners would draw a picture of how they arrived at school that day and place their picture in the appropriate column for classmates to observe. Another idea for a picture graph is "How many people are in your family?" Students would draw their family and place their picture in the column with the corresponding number. In addition, kindergartners could draw a graph for "Do you like sugar, chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies best?" Children would then draw a smiling face under the cookie that is their favorite.

    Bar Graph

    • Bar graphs are similar to picture graphs, but instead of a picture, children color in a square on the graph to represent their data. One bar graph idea the whole class could complete is "What color are your eyes?" Children would color in a single square on the graph under the heading that matches their eye color. You could also have children work on a bar graph for "How many numbers are in your name?" Kindergartners would write out their name and tape it up under the appropriate number on the graph.

    One Circle Venn Diagram

    • A one circle Venn diagram involves drawing a single large circle and writing the graph title on the inside. Kindergarten students must share their thoughts by placing an "X" or writing their name inside the circle if their answer is yes or outside the circle if their answer is no. One circle Venn diagram topics include "My name starts with A," "I ate breakfast" and "I like ice cream."
