Have each child recite a favorite prayer. It can be a nighttime prayer, a prayer before meals or a school prayer. Print each prayer, in a large font, and make a collage of them, with the child's name attached, on background paper to be displayed on a bulletin board.
Give children Catholic magazines from which they can cut out clippings of religious images such as angels or crosses. This will help them work on their cutting, sorting and decision-making skills while exposing them to artwork that relates to their faith tradition.
Take a photo of each child with his or her hands in a prayer position. Or have each child bring in a photocopied picture of herself from her baptismal day. Make a collage of these images for display in the classroom.
Ask each child to draw a picture of a church. It can be a simple square with a triangle and a cross on top or something more elaborate. Encourage creativity. They can also draw pictures of the interiors of their own parish churches.
Teach the children to block-print simple phrases about Jesus. Recommend: "Jesus loves me", "I love Jesus" or "Jesus is my friend". Keep it simple and sweet. If students have not yet learned their alphabet, write out the phrases for them to copy.
Encourage each child to glue her collage in random positions on the bulletin board. Tell them it is permitted to slightly overlap some of the items. Double-sided tape can be used in lieu of glue. Instruct the kids to write their names and ages on the collages. Hang them as is, or frame them.
