Kindergarten Ideas With the Book Five Little Monkeys

The sing-song rhyming style and fun illustrations found in "Five Little Monkeys" make it a Kindergarten class favorite. The predictability and repetitive words encourage class participation during reading and allow the story to be adapted to create additional rhymes and activities. These activities will allow your class to enjoy the "Five Little Monkeys" during story time, snack time and beyond.
  1. Sight Words

    • The repetition of words in the book allows kindergarten children to read along. Print repeated words, such as mama, doctor, monkeys or bed, on sheets of paper. Show the students the words before reading the book and tell them what each word is. Read the book once. Read it again, and this time encourage participation by pointing to a repeated word and being silent while the class fills in the blank. Post the sight words on your sight word wall.

    Action Story

    • Count how many students are in the class and retell the story beginning with that number as the number of monkeys jumping on the bed. Have children all start jumping in place as you begin the rhyme. Touch each child one at a time as you say the "fell off and bumped his head" part of the rhyme. Have each child sit down as he is touched on the head. Continue until all children are seated.

    Science Lesson

    • Read a nonfiction book about monkeys. Discuss what monkeys eat, where they live and how they interact with one another and humans. Also discuss bananas -- where they grow, how they change in color from green to yellow and how the peeling protects the fruit inside. Cut a banana open and point out the seeds. Have bananas for snack time.

    Class Story

    • Create a class version of the story. To prepare, use a flip chart and write the words of the story. However, leave out some words such as bed, head and doctor. Draw blank lines where the missing words go. During class, ask the students to help fill in the blanks to create a silly story. Read the silly story together. Print the completed story on smaller paper and store in the reading center.
