Ideas to Use With the Gingerbread Man Story for Kindergarten

The Gingerbread Man, a classic story re-written by many authors, is a terrific theme for a kindergarten classroom. Children love the sing-song poetry in the story as well as the thrill of the chase. Kindergarten teachers can creatively promote literacy, dramatic play and math skills using this mischievous animated pastry.
  1. Gingerman Story Books

    • Create story books with the kindergarten students. Trace gingerbread shapes construction paper and allow the children to cut out the shapes. Attach four or five pieces of white gingerbread man shaped paper to the cutouts at the hand and feet with colorful ribbon. Have the students will decorate the front as gingerbread men then fill in the pages with sight words from the story, such as "run", "cow" or "man." Ask them to draw pictures creating their own gingerbread man story and offer opportunities to share their stories with the rest of the class.

    Finish the Poem

    • Copy the Gingerbread Man's poetic chant, leaving out the last line. The students will use cards with a picture and the name of a story character to fill in the last line. Some characters from the story are a cow, horse, duck, man and woman. After this simple activity, tell children to think of rhyming words and write them down. Create a class poem together from the rhyming words and display it in the classroom.

    Act It Out

    • Assign children to act out the story with each kindergartener receiving an assigned animal. That child will act like the assigned animal while chasing a child who is the Gingerbread Man. If the animal catches the Gingerbread Man, the animal is the new Gingerbread Man. Animals give chase to a predetermined point so every child has a turn in the game.

    Bake a Man

    • Bring in all the ingredients, measuring cups and spoons to bake gingerbread men. Talk to the school cafeteria to make sure they have time to bake the finished cookies. Kindergarten children will help measure ingredients and mix everything together, then roll it all out and use cookie cutters to make the gingerbread shapes. This activity is a pre-math activity -- appropriate for kindergarten -- as students are creating exact measurements with the cups and spoons. Make sure to tell the students they are using a half cup or a quarter teaspoon, as the pre-math vocabulary is just as important as the activity itself.
