Create a multi-sensory experience. Start with a simple sensory exploration. Show the students a real-life pumpkin. Invite them to touch, see and smell the pumpkin.
Discuss the pumpkin's appearance with the students, making it easier to draw during the design process. Encourage the students to tell you what shape they think the pumpkin is as well as the colors that they see.
Give each student a circle-shaped template. Compare this to the real pumpkin. Ask the kindergartners to trace the circle with a marker onto the orange construction paper and cut the pumpkin circle out.
Brainstorm ideas about what is missing from the pumpkin (hint: the stem). Cut a small rectangle from the green construction paper to approximately 2 inches by 4 inches. Glue the stem to the top of the pumpkin circle.
Repeat for different sizes of pumpkins using different templates.
