Sunflower Craft to Do With Kindergarten Students

The venerable sunflower is a native North American flower first domesticated by Native American Indians. The National Sunflower Association (sunflowernsa.com) suggests the flower may have been cultivated as early as 3000 B.C. throughout New Mexico and Arizona. Sunflowers are cheery with their vibrant yellows and blacks and are easily incorporated into craft projects for kindergarten students.
  1. Paper Plate Sunflower Wall Décor

    • Use paper plates to create sunflowers to hang on the classroom wall or for kindergartners to take home. Turn a paper plate over so the back is facing up. Use the paper plate template (Resources 1) to print petals and an optional sunflower face. Cut out the petals and trace around them on yellow construction paper or color white paper petals yellow. Color the back center of the plate black. Glue the yellow petals around the edges of the back center of the plate with school glue. Glue eyes and a mouth to the black center back of the plate with glue. Tape a green crepe paper streamer to the undecorated side of the plate for a stem. Write the child's name on the undecorated side of the plate.

    Sunflower Foam Photo Frame Magnet

    • Print and cut out flower templates (Resources 2). Trace the petal templates onto yellow foam. Trace the center circle template onto black foam. Cut the yellow flower petals and black center circle from the foam with scissors. Center and glue the black circle on top of the flower center with school glue or foam glue. Cut out a head shot of each kindergartner in a circle smaller than the black flower middle. Center and glue the photo circle onto the black foam circle. Cut a strip of magnet to fit the back of the sunflower. Remove the paper coating from the adhesive and press the magnet to the sunflower back.

    Crafty Alphabet Tie-Ins

    • Let your kindergartners color a sunflower coloring page (Resources 3). Write or glue a pre-cut letter to the center of each sunflower. Examples of letters to feature when using sunflowers are "F" for flower, "S" for sunflower or "Y" for yellow.

    Sunflower Seed Mosaic

    • Use a coloring page of a large sunflower (Resources 3) as the foundation for a sunflower seed mosaic. Cut the sunflower from the coloring page and glue it to a larger piece of yellow construction paper. Distribute a cup of sunflower seeds to each child. Use school glue to outline the sunflower. Press sunflower seeds into the glue outline.
