Girl Scout Try-It Activities for Daisies

Daisy Girl Scout petals are the equivalent of the Try-It badges they'll earn as Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts. Each petal represents a value that is important to the Daisies and is centered around the promise circle they earn when they can recite The Girl Scout Promise.
  1. Violet Petal

    • The violet daisy petal represents the aspect of The Girl Scout Promise that tells girls to be a sister to every Girl Scout. Ideas for activities for earning the violet petal include becoming pen pals with a troop from another city, learning about their equivalents in other countries and perhaps listening to stories from parents or grandparents from those countries.

    Light Blue Petal

    • The light blue daisy petal reminds girls to be honest and fair. Teaching about these values can include reading stories about honesty and fairness, such as "The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf," which also teaches the consequences of lying. Another idea is to have a game day, where girls must practice fairness and honesty.

    Yellow Petal

    • The yellow daisy petal represents the values of being friendly and helpful. This is a good petal to work on when the girls are getting ready to bridge up to becoming helpful little Brownies. Read the girls the Brownie story and point out all the ways the Brownies in the story are helpful. Now have them make paper daisies that say "a Daisy was here" on them that they can leave at the site of a helpful task.

    Spring Green Petal

    • The spring green daisy petal represents consideration and caring. Girls young enough to be Daisy Girl Scouts are still learning about doing things for other people just for the purpose of being considerate and caring. One way to bring the idea home is to pair the girls up into secret pals. Give the girls a few weeks to do secret caring things for their pals, without letting on who they are. At the end of the project see how many girls were able to guess who their secret pal was.

    Red Petal

    • The red daisy petal represents strength and courage. These are important values for Daisy Girl Scouts and this petal can be one of the most fun to earn. Have a parent teach the girls a new sport, such as some tumbling tricks or how to roller skate. Or take them to an ethnic restaurant where they have to eat one thing they've never had before and then teach them a traditional dance or game from that country. Trying new things and learning to move their bodies in unfamiliar ways will earn them their petal.

    Orange Petal

    • Girls earn their orange daisy petal for taking responsibility for what they say and do. Talk to your troop about hurtful things that can be said or done, like gossiping or not taking care of something that belongs to someone else. Play a game of telephone to show how words can get mixed up through gossiping. Another idea is to take on a service project that helps the environment, such as picking up trash or planting flowers at their school.

    Purple Petal

    • The purple daisy petal is awarded when the girls learn to respect themselves and others. Girls can earn this petal for learning manners, remembering to send thank you cards to people or companies that help their troop or having a medical professional visit and talk to them about taking care of themselves. Another way to earn this petal is to learn about a safety topic, such as bike safety.

    Magenta Petal

    • When Daisy Girl Scouts learn to respect authority, they earn their magenta petal. They can earn this petal by visiting a local police station or having a police officer visit their troop. Another idea is to have their school principal come by and talk to them about their job. Girls can also learn how to use 9-1-1 responsibly to ask for help.

    Green Petal

    • The green daisy petal represents the wise use of resources. One way to earn this petal is a troop-wide recycling project. Teach the girls about why it is important to recycle or reuse as many products as possible, and reduce their use of disposable items. Girls can collect cans throughout the year and turn them in to earn money for a project or to donate to a charity.

    Rose Petal

    • Girls earn the rose daisy petal by doing something to make the world a better place. To earn this petal, Daisy Girl Scouts should complete a project that in some way impacts the world. Planting trees or organizing a food drive are two ideas. The purpose of the rose daisy petal is to help girls see that their actions have a wider impact.
