Leadership Activities & Lessons for Girls

Whether you're looking for ways to incorporate leadership activities into your daughter's home-school curriculum or seeking extracurricular opportunities for her, a variety of activities and exercises can help her build confidence, supplement her education and give her leadership experience. You can teach your daughter the three components of leadership taught by the Girl Scouts of America: discovering, connecting and taking action.
  1. Volunteer Activities

    • Have your daughter learn leadership skills by serving others. Volunteer together at the local soup kitchen, child crisis center or humane society. Have her organize a group of friends who take turns helping a neighbor with chores. Or the group can visit a nursing home once or twice a week. Have your daughter keep a journal, write a narrative or essay, or document her volunteer experiences. Encourage her to incorporate her thoughts and opinions on broader related issues.

    Hands-On Leadership

    • Encourage your daughter to learn a craft. Have her research and establish a community garden in your area. She'll learn vegetable gardening basics, local codes regarding gardens, and how to establish the garden and its community of gardeners. She may want to designate the garden as a student garden to lead and educate her peers on how to save money, cultivate the earth and create access to local, healthy food. If your daughter loves fashion and has sewing skills, encourage her to host clothing swaps where friends rummage through one another's clothes, altering and embellishing them to fit their own tastes. Your daughter can help others learn basic sewing skills, and she will be leading an eco-friendly get-together.

    Educational Lessons

    • Encourage your daughter to take on a project about something she's passionate about. Have her brainstorm, research, plan and see the project through to completion. Have her write, shoot and edit a narrative or documentary film about the issue. She'll learn more about the film's subject, build some basic filmmaking skills and gain experience with the creative process. She will be able to express herself, too. Encourage her to attend workshops, lectures, performances and camps that nurture specific areas or her general educational needs. A well-educated girl has the tools and confidence to lead others.

    Financial and Business Leadership

    • Teach your daughter the basics of personal finance. Talk to her about checking and savings accounts, budgeting and saving. Provide her with information on the pitfalls of credit cards before she turns 18 so she doesn't fall into the trap of borrowing and living beyond her means. Encourage her to try out business ideas based on her skills. For instance, if she enjoys playing the violin, she may offer to play at functions for a fee, or she might set up a shop to sell handmade crafts.
