Activities for Children Concerning Leadership

While some children possess certain characteristics that make them natural leaders, others prefer to follow the crowd. With the proper encouragement and tools, however, children can learn leadership skills that will help them be successful later in life. Leadership activities help build these skills by teaching children to be self-motivated, confident and good problem solvers.
  1. Mine Field

    • Select an outdoor space in which to place various obstacles, such as balls, crates, bowling pins and boxes. Divide the children in pairs; one person in each pair must wear a blindfold. Instruct the children to guide their blindfolded partner across the minefield without bumping into anything. If they bump into an object, they must start over. This activity teaches the blindfolded children to be trusting and the leaders to guide their partners safely to the other side.

    Stand By Your Quote

    • This exercise teaches leadership awareness. Put different leadership quotes on the wall or board. Each quote should focus on leadership aspects. Instruct students to stand next to the quote that matches how they feel about leadership. Once everyone is standing by their desired quote, ask your students to explain why the quote is important to them.

    Multi-Way Tug-Of-War

    • Play the multi-way version of tug-of-war using several ropes. Divide the children into groups of three or four. Tie the ropes together to create one rope for all groups. Instruct the children to hold onto the rope, and try to pull the rope in their direction. Create a line for each group, so they know how far to pull the rope to win. Group members must communicate with one another to pull the rope away from the other groups.

    Survival Scenario

    • This activity helps children use their communication and leadership skills to solve problems. Divide children into groups of three or four. Provide them with a survival scenario, such as a plane crash, and instruct them to rank the 12 most needed items for survival. Give them approximately 10 minutes to complete the activity. Once everyone is finished, ask the groups to discuss what strategies they used to come up with their decision.
