Soldiers often work in hot, dry desert climates. One idea for a Girl Scout Bronze project is to make cool ties to send to them. Cool ties are bandanas sewn so that they have two pockets that hold water absorbing polymers. The cool bandanas are worn behind the neck with the pockets hanging on either side down the front. Part of the project could include raising money to purchase the supplies and ship the cool ties.
When soldiers leave their homes to train or go on missions, they leave families behind. Brownies may enjoy organizing a drive to collect items to help support these families while their loved one is gone. Collecting diapers and baby items is one idea. Another is to put together gift boxes for the children of soldiers. The girl organizing this project is in charge of soliciting and collecting the items, putting them together as necessary and delivering them.
Some soldiers are away from home and have no family to send them letters and care packages. Writing letters and putting together care packages for these soldiers is a good way to earn a Bronze Award. Basic toiletries, small special treats and homemade items are all things that soldiers would enjoy receiving. The girl organizing this project can have her troop or class write letters to soldiers as well.
When an American flag is too tattered to fly, it may not be thrown away or burned. A flag manufacturer in New York has come up with a special way to dispose of these flags and bring a smile to soldiers and veterans at the same time. The company collects flags that can no longer be flown and volunteers cut out each star by hand. These stars are packaged with a note and given to military personnel. One idea for a Bronze Award is to do the same -- collecting flags and cutting out the stars to hand out to local veterans.
