The Caring and Sharing Try-it is awarded to Brownie Girl Scouts who have shown that they are aware of the needs of others and are willing to be helpful. One way to work toward the Caring and Sharing Try-it is to participate in a community-service project that helps others. Cleaning up a public park, pulling weeds in the yard of someone who can't do it themselves or volunteering to spend time with the elderly in a nursing home are all examples.
The Listening to the Past Try-it is for those Brownies who take the time to learn about history. One way to do this is to find a way to experience the history of their own town and the people who live there. The girls could each take an oral history of a family member or neighbor who has lived in the area for a long time and present it to their troop. Another idea is to gather recipes that are popular in their families or in their region to make a troop cookbook, complete with stories about the dishes.
Brownie Girl Scouts are encouraged to explore science through the Science in Action Try-it. The girls can work together to collect data about local flora and fauna, take tours of natural wonders in their area, experiment with simple chemistry and learn about the world around them by keeping a nature journal. The Science in Action Try-it is a good opportunity to invite a guest speaker to a troop meeting or to take the girls on a field trip.
The Manners Try-it is for Brownies who have done work toward learning basic manners, such as how to answer the phone politely, how to introduce themselves and others, and table manners. Hosting a tea party for the girls and their mothers or grandmothers is one way to earn this Try-it. Girls can learn how to set a table, make introductions and practice table manners in advance of the tea party.
