Brownie Fly Up Ceremony Ideas

Flying up from being a Brownie to a Junior is an important ceremony in the life of any Girl Scout. It's also full of symbolism and tradition. Girls spend time learning about what being a Junior Girl Scout will entail and how they will move up to the next step. Brownies also help Daisy Scouts move up to be Brownies during their own fly-up ceremony.
  1. Wings

    • Wings are a traditional part of a Brownie fly-up ceremony. They represent the girls' flight from Brownies to Junior Girl Scouts. Have each girl choose a type of bird and make large wings from poster board that they can color in with markers or paint. Tape the wings to the back of their new Junior Girl Scout vests.

    Stepping Stones

    • Brownies traditionally walk on a path of stepping stones as they make their way on the path to becoming Junior Girl Scouts. Girls can make these stones from pieces of brown construction paper, cut into rough stone shapes and decorated with black markers to look authentic. These are taped to the stage during the fly-up ceremony for the girls to step on.

    Bridge

    • The Brownie fly-up is called bridging and often a real or symbolic bridge is used in the ceremony. If you have a local park with a real bridge, this is a perfect setting for the fly-up ceremony. A card table decorated with crepe paper to look like a bridge becomes a great decoration for the fly-up stage.

    Candles

    • Candles are a traditional part of the Brownie fly-up ceremony. Have six candles on hand during the ceremony, one each in white, red, orange, yellow, blue and purple. The five colored candles represent the five Girl Scout worlds: Well-being, today and tomorrow, out-of-doors, people and arts. The white candle is the light of the cadet and is used to light the others.
