How to Teach Kindergarten Children to Count Backward

Kindergarten children are busy learning several early math skills and concepts, including how to count. Just as important as learning how to count forward is how to count backward, as counting backward fluently will help students get ready for subtraction and other math skills later in elementary school. The prerequisite for counting backward is, of course, being able to count forward. Once kindergarten kids are comfortable with this skill, you can begin teaching backward counting using interactive and engaging activities.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pocket chart. Print the numbers one through 10 on index cards and place them in sequential order in a pocket chart. Instruct your students to count aloud as you point to each of the numbers, moving in a forward progression. Then instruct your students to call out the numbers aloud as you point to them moving backward: 10, nine, eight, etc.

    • 2

Write the numbers one through 10 on the ground with sidewalk chalk. Encourage one student at a time to jump on the numbers, starting at the number 10 and moving backward to the number nine and so forth, until reaching the number one. While jumping from number to number, students should call out each number.

    • 3

Draw 10 boxes on a piece of paper and write the numbers one through 10 in the boxes -- number one in the first box, number two in the second box and so forth. Provide children with a truck and instruct them to roll the truck over the boxes on the paper, starting at 10 and moving down the line of boxes to number one. As children roll the truck over each box, they should say each number aloud.
