How to Teach Continents in Kindergarten

Learning about the Earth's seven continents is an important lesson for kindergarteners. Once a student knows about the seven continents, he can begin to learn more about geography and the world's countries. Teaching continents is a matter of getting the students to memorize and become familiar with the name and location of each land mass. Kindergarteners are often curious about their surroundings. Through learning about the continents, they can expand their worldview and begin to question the world around them.

Instructions

    • 1

Hand out a paper world map to kindergarteners that shows the outlines of the continents.

    • 2

Stand at the front of the classroom with a large, colored map of the continents.

    • 3

Show children where North America is. Explain that they live in North America. Have the children write the words "North America" on the maps they have in front of them.

    • 4

Continue pointing out the location of all of the continents to the kindergartners. With each continent, share a fact that will help the students remember. For example, tell them that Africa is where lions and tigers roam.

    • 5

Have the kindergarteners write in the names of each continent on their personal map.

    • 6

Play a game with the kindergarteners to help them learn the continent names. For example, throw an inflatable globe around the room. As each student catches the globe, he should name a continent.

    • 7

Test the students by giving them new, blank maps with outlines of continents on them. Each student should fill in the outline with the name of the appropriate continent.
