Create several posters or decorative charts that list each sight word. Hang these posters in your classroom where children see them every day. Focus on studying one chart each week and review the words on that chart with your students several times throughout the day. Ask students which words they recognize and verbally reaffirm students who successfully identify a word.
Create a set of flashcards for each student so they can review their words each day. Each card should contain a word and, if possible, a picture of the word for recognition help. Make your own cards for students or print off pre-made cards from an educational website. (See Resources.) Ask your students to look over their flashcards at home each morning while they eat breakfast and each night before bed. Remind your kindergartners that frequent studying will improve their memorization of sight words.
If your students remember best when something is presented with a catchy tune, consider spending some classroom time singing. You can make up your own song about sight words to music your students are already familiar with or select a professionally distributed sight word song audio CD or song book. When a word is sung during the song, point to it on one of your wall charts or hold up a flashcard with that word so children match the sound of the word with its visual counterpart.
To make classroom time more interesting, play games that focus on sight word recognition. Your students may enjoy playing bingo or Memory using sight words instead of regular playing cards. Another game option is to turn off your classroom lights and use a flashlight to light up a word on your classroom wall. Have students yell out the words they recognize and offer a treat to the student who gets the most words correct.
