Lessons on the American Flag for Kindergartners

From crafty creations to more academic activities that involve literacy and mathematics, there is an array of lessons on the American flag that kindergartners can enjoy. You can help your young students to understand better this patriotic symbol of the U.S. with a few interactive projects that will encourage the kids to explore and make new discoveries for themselves.
  1. Vocabulary

    • Instead of reciting a list of vocabulary words, you can transform a language and literacy lesson into a colorfully creative art activity that focuses on the American flag. Provide the kids with words such as patriotic or simple color vocabulary at the start of the lesson. Have the students create their own flags by painting or coloring the red and white stripes and the blue rectangle at the top left. Display the flags and ask the children to use their new words to describe the flags. For example, a student could say, "The stripes are red and white and the stars are also white." Another option is to print out a flag worksheet, or you can easily make your own by drawing the stripes and star area with a pencil and ruler, and label each part with the corresponding color. Ask the children to read the color words and use a crayon or marker to fill them in.

    Fine Motor Skills

    • Build up your students' fine motor skills and help them to develop dexterity and eye-hand coordination through an American flag activity. Help the kids to understand better what the flag looks like while they use their fine motor movements to create their own using techniques such as cutting and pasting. Give each child a piece of white construction paper, turning it horizontally to look like a flag shape. Invite the kids to cut quarter-sized squares, rectangles or other shapes out red, white and blue paper. Have the kids make a collage with the cut pieces on the white construction paper, attaching them in a flag pattern with glue.

    Math

    • You can teach your kindergarten students about counting with a patriotic lesson on the American flag. Hang a flag or flag poster in the front of the classroom at the kids' eye level. Start with the stripes, and have the class count the white ones and then the red. Next, have them count all of the stripes together, including both colors. As they master counting to higher numbers, point to each star individually and have the class count all 50 together.

    Letters

    • Focus on the letter F, teaching the children a combination social studies and literacy lesson. Print out a letter F worksheet that features the alphabet and an image of the flag from an educational or free printable website such as First-School. The kids can color on the flag and practice printing the letter F as they say the word. Add a story-time activity to this lesson and read a matching book such as "F is for Flag" by Wendy Cheyette Lewison or "Flag Day" by Kelly Bennett.
