You can take the test if you are 16 years old through special permission. Each state has different requirements for taking the test. Generally, if you are a 17 year old, you will need either evidence that you left high school due to health or family concerns, or you will need a recommendation from the school to allow you to sit for the test. GED Testing Services (GEDTS) requires individuals who take the GED® test before the age of 18 to have documentation that they are eligible to take the test. Please make sure to consult the GED website or contact your state's GED office to find out the specific requirements for your state.
