Check with your school before ordering audio textbooks from RFB&D. Many schools have institutional memberships and will provide audio textbooks. For college students, check with your university or college Office of Disability Services to see if you can order textbooks through them or if the university has a program for recording textbooks for you.
Obtain documentation of the disability from a qualified professional. This includes doctors, psychologists and certain other professionals. Teachers, guidance counselors, or school principals are not qualified to document a disability. For complete details on documentation, use the Documentation Requirements link at the end of this article.
Use the Application link at the end of this article to go to the RFB&D application page. You can print and mail an application form, but it is much easier to apply online. You will need a credit card to pay the registration fee ($65) and the first year’s annual fee ($35). It’s a good idea to contact your state Department of Vocational Rehabilitation as they will frequently cover these fees for you.
Follow the instructions to submit documentation of disability. Once the documentation is received RFB&D will complete processing your application and you will be able to get audio textbooks for the blind.
Order audio textbooks by going to the RFB&D site and choosing the Order button. You can get up to 35 books per year with no additional charge. However, it takes several weeks to record a book. If you need to get an audio textbook for the blind that is not in stock you will have to place the order well in advance. The best way to avoid problems is to check with teachers (or university professors) at least two months before a term starts and order your books then.
