Make reading a priority. Reading is the main way children learn vocabulary outside of the classroom. And they are more likely to emulate their parents' reading behavior. If you read a lot, so will they. Schedule "Reading Days" and unplug the TVs to save energy and to avoid distractions.

Try to recruit other parents of your children's classmates to adopt the practice. Remember that the goal is success in school, and the example and structure you provide in the home will be the biggest factor in that success.

Teach your children to use the dictionary to look up words they don't know. Add online dictionary sites to your favorites and their favorites. Children enjoy reading more when they understand the majority of words in their books. Sign them up for a "Word of the Day" from an online dictionary.

    • 3

Play word games with your children. Great games that you can play at a kitchen table or on a card table include Scrabble, Boggle and UpWords. Find online word games, too.

    • 4

Use the Rice Game to increase vocabulary. Freerice.com earns rice for the hungry with every right answer in vocabulary and grammar games.

    • 5

Support and reinforce the teaching of English at your children's school. Language is the foundation for reading, writing, speaking and success in other school subjects. Ask the teachers how you can best help your children succeed in English, then do what they suggest.

Lead by example. Be a good reading role model for your children.
