How to Read Assessment Grades

Assessment testing has become standard in public schools across the United States as federal and state governments use the scores to evaluate the effectiveness of a school. It's also often used to determine federal and state funding. Parents get copies of the scores from their child's test, but they can be hard to understand if you don't know how to read assessment grades.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine what tests the student took. One of the first things listed on the assessment grade printout are the different tests your child was given. These are often listed by subject, such as math, reading and science.

    • 2

Learn what the objectives of the test were. The objectives are generally listed on the main page to let you know upfront why the test was given and what it was designed to measure.

    • 3

Review how your student did in meeting each objective. Once you've reviewed the objectives of the test, you'll find your student's scores in each objective. Some assessment tests provide printouts that include the number of correct answers and the total number possible for each objective while others list a percentage of how many questions were answered correctly for a specific objective.

    • 4

Check to see whether your student received a passing score. The assessment printout, in addition to showing your child's score, will list a minimum score for each objective or subject that your child must obtain in order to have passed the assessment. If your child didn't meet the minimum score, the printout will inform you of the steps you need to take, such as meeting with a teacher or keeping a student back a year.

    • 5

Ask for clarification from a teacher, counselor or principal. If you're still having trouble understanding assessment grades, ask your child's teacher, school counselor or principal. They are knowledgeable about assessment grades and how they are scored, and they can provide an in-depth explanation for any questions you have.
