Technology Trends in Schools

Technology is an important part of everyday life in schools. There are several aspects of technology trends that are found in preschool to post-graduate schools. Technology is mostly use to enhance already established learning and curriculum, but because of the knowledge it takes to operate the technology, it has also become a subject within itself that needs to be studied.

    Keyboarding

    • The route of technology now lies in understanding the basics behind running a keyboard and typing. Almost every other type of technology, from the Internet to computerized searches to video and audio software, usually require the use of the keyboard and good typing skills. Students begin in kindergarten with basic typing courses that teach them how to find the letters on the keyboard with their fingers. Drill software is used, which encourages children to learn how to use the home row of key strokes and how to reach to the other keys. It is important for children to learn to type as quickly as possible so they can continue to learn more technology.

    Basic Computer Skills

    • At the same time kids are learning basic keyboarding skills, they are also using basic computer skills. Some educators argue that understanding a computer is more important than understanding how to type. Trends in schools are to teach basic computer use as soon as students understand what a computer is, even as early as preschool. Trends that are being practiced include having students begin to use pointing and clicking features with the mouse, keyboard shortcuts and managing drop-down menus first. Then, they progress to learning how to navigate files and folders and run computer programs. Trends in early education show that students are using basic computer programs and Internet game programs as early as first or second grade to help incorporate technology into everyday learning.

    Classroom Technology

    • Items including computerized microscopes, computers, word processing systems and the Internet are used for every subject imaginable. Research is done online or on computerized encyclopedias. Presentations are put together in PowerPoint and other programs. Teachers provide students with information via SmartBoards, presentation software and webcams.

    Video and Audio Technology

    • Webcams, video and audio recording software, and programs designed to shoot, edit and produce video and audio segments are being used more often in classrooms today and are among the fastest-growing technology trends in schools. Students often participate in video and audio projects and share projects online or over webcams with other students.

    Considerations

    • Technology can be used in all subjects for educational purposes. However, it must be taught before it can be used. Teachers must spend time learning how to use Smartboards before they can present information to their students using them. Students must learn how to navigate the Internet before they can use it for research. The trend is to spend time teaching the technology before using it because technology has become an important part of life in the modern world.
