Even with sales, a wardrobe for a new school year can be costly, particularly when teens feel pressure to stay on top of the latest trends. School uniforms with just a few articles (skirt, pants and shirt) are usually more affordable.
Clothes and fashion can be the source of teasing among children, making things particularly difficult for children from low income families. Requiring all students to wear identical uniforms removes this issue and helps create more balance and equality among the student body.
According to Temecula, CA Superintendent Michael Read, a school uniforms "creates this sense that school isn't about going to play." Many schools report a noticeable improvement in student focus when uniforms are implemented, as they create a work environment rather than a social one. There is less peer pressure on students to try to "fit in" with their fellow students based simply on dress.
An article in the Public School review reports that in the Long Beach, CA school district, after one year of uniforms, "the fights and muggings at school decreased by 50 percent, while committed sexual offenses were reduced by 74 percent."
With school uniforms in place, potentially dangerous intruders will not be able to blend and enter the campus. Staff and school security officers will be better able to identify interlopers.
