America's Best Private Day Schools

Three of the top five private schools on the 2010 top 20 list ranked by "Forbes" magazine are located in New York City. Other schools on the list vary in location, but a disproportionate number of them are in the northeast, particularly in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
  1. Trinity School

    • Trinity School, a private day school for girls in grades K through 12, is located in New York City's prestigious Upper West Side. When the school was originally founded in 1709, there were only 40 students; today, the average combined enrollment of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools is 960 students.

      Trinity School's campus features art and photography studios, science labs, two chapels, a rooftop playing field, a garden, two theaters, two libraries, two swimming pools and three gymnasiums. In 2010, Trinity School received the number 1 spot on the "Forbes" list of America's best prep schools. Tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year was $35,025 for students in grades K through 8 and $36,120 for students in grades 9 through 12.

    Horace Mann School

    • The approximately 1,781 students enrolled at the Horace Mann School, which was ranked as the second best prep school in America on the 2010 "Forbes" list, are spread among the school's three New York campuses. The Nursery Division campus, for students ages 3 to kindergarten level, is located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The Lower Division campus, for students in grades one through five, sits where the former Barnard School used to be, in the Bronx's Riverdale neighborhood. The Middle/Upper Division campus spans 18 acres, overlooking Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx; students in grades six through 12 attend school at this campus.

      Tuition for students in the Nursery Division ranges from $25,600 to $35,670, as reported for the 2010-2011 academic year. Tuition for the Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions, also reported for the 2010-2011 academic year, is $35,670.

    The Brearley School

    • The Brearley School is a private, non-denominational day school for girls in kindergarten through the 12th grade. In 2010, the school had an enrollment of approximately 690, with students spread relatively evenly among the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. Facilities at the school include two libraries with 26,000 volumes between them; an art floor complete with rooms for sculpture, photography, ceramics and drawing; two full-sized computer labs; two gymnasiums; a dance studio; a fitness room; artificial turf fields; and an outdoor swimming pool.

      Tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year was reported as being $35,200 for girls in kindergarten through the fourth grade, and $35,550 for girls in grades five through 12. The Brearley School received the number four ranking on the "Forbes" 2010 list of America's best prep schools.
