How to Collaborate With a Special Education Administration

Special education teachers and administrators at schools in the U.S. provide students in need of additional assistance with the help and resources needed to be successful in obtaining their education. Often these students have physical or mental disabilities or impairments that make learning more difficult than for the average student. As a parent it's important to learn how to collaborate with special education teachers and administrators to ensure that your child has the best educational experience possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Take time to personally meet the special education teachers and administrators who will be working with your child. Learn about their education and experience. Let them know that you want to work with them as a team to provide the best education for your child.

    • 2

Develop a plan. Each student in special education is required to have an individual education plan (IEP). This outlines what the special education teachers will focus on when working with your child as well as what special assistance or resources your child will be provided with. This is customized to your child and his needs so don't be afraid to speak up during the planning meeting about what you know works best for your child.

    • 3

Take an active role. Ask the special education administrators and teachers how you can be involved in helping your student learn. Find out what exercises or activities you can do at home in the evenings or on the weekends to reinforce what is being taught at school. If you are unfamiliar about special education or your child's disabilities, ask administrators or teachers for their recommendations on books you could read to learn more and be better informed.

    • 4

Communicate regularly. Check in regularly with the special education teachers and administrators to learn about your student's progress and any problems they may be having. If you feel that changes need to be made in what is being taught or the assistance being provided, ask the special education administrators to hold another IEP meeting. This allows you, the teachers and the administrators to gather and make changes to better suit your child.
