Bring out a long pole or broomstick and play the limbo dance song. Two people hold either end of the pole at neck level and the students gather in a line on one side. They then pass under the limbo bar, one at a time by bending backwards. If the student falls down or tries to pass under the bar by bending forward, he is eliminated. After all of the students have passed under the bar, lower it to chest height. Keep lowering the bar after each round until there is only one student remaining. You might need to loop the song to keep it going for the many rounds.
Play the chicken dance and watch the students gather around to dance to the song. This is a popular tune to play for dances from grade school to adult wedding receptions. If the students seem reluctant to dance, have someone dress as a chicken and dance to the song in the middle of the dance floor. To do the chicken dance, open and close your palms four times like bird beaks, then bend your arms at the elbows and flap like a chicken four times, then squat down while wiggling your posterior like a waddling chicken for a count of four, and then clap four times.
A pinata is a paper mache hollow figure decorated with brightly colored tissue paper outside and filled with candy on the inside. These can be made or purchased from local party stores or on the Internet. If your pinata did not come filled, cut a small hole in the top and fill it with a candy mix. Tape the hole closed. Hang the pinata from the ceiling. Have the students stand in a wide circle around the pinata, and each of them in turn will be blindfolded and given a baseball bat. The blindfolded student then takes three swings at the pinata, trying to break it. The students take turns being blindfolded until the pinata breaks. When this happens, all of the students run forward and gather as much candy as possible from the ground. Save this activity for the end of a school dance to avoid dancers from stepping on chocolates dropped on the dance floor.
Karaoke is a party game where players sing the lyrics of songs played. The songs have had the vocals removed, leaving behind the music. Purchase karaoke CDs and a microphone for connecting to the sound system. This will require those singing to remember the lyrics. Another option is to rent a karaoke machine from a party store. These will show the lyrics to the song on a display and they come with a microphone. This activity will likely draw outgoing students to the microphone at first, with others following in the fun.
