What Are Educational Competencies?

Educational competencies have been listed and categorized by the Microsoft and the leadership development firm, Lominger. Rather than focusing on content knowledge, the Educational Competencies work with skill and attitudes that are needed in current careers. The competencies are organized into a pie chart of 37 competencies organized into six clusters: individual excellence, operating skills, strategic skills, courage, organization skills and results. Microsoft Education lists clusters subdivided into individual competencies employers seek in current students and future employees.
  1. Individual Excellence

    • Employers seek excellent students and employees who are willing to build effective teams through attributes of compassion, integrity, motivation and interpersonal skills such as listening. Future employees seek to focus on customer needs through negotiation and appropriate humor and are willing to develop personally through personal learning and relationship management. Finally, excellent students and employees share a vision and purpose while valuing diversity in people and ideas.

    Operating Skills

    • Operating skills include making decisions quickly and effectively so time is managed well. Students and employees organize, plan and implement projects according to priority. Careful leaders also measure and manage how much work needs to be done and establish a feasible deadline. Effective leaders develop and direct others for the benefit of the whole to make sure the process and systems work smoothly.

    Strategic Skills

    • Strategic skills require unique thinking that is demonstrated through creativity, innovation and problem-solving abilities. Strategic thinking confronts ambiguity so ideas are communicated clearly. Strategic skills also include technical skills, intellect and spontaneous learning. This strategic agility is essential for managing innovational thinking.

    Courage

    • In future careers, it takes courage to assess talent both within self and in others. Courageous people recognize the potential in themselves and co-workers. It also takes courage to confront conflict stemming from different ideas and personalities. This managerial courage recognizes risks and benefits from intervening for the benefit of the whole work team and the completion of each task.

    Organizational Skills

    • Students and employees need written communication and organizational skills to work effectively. Organizing resources allows students employees to be flexible and understanding while maintaining the standards set by authority, whether it is a teacher or supervisor. Once the work is completed, students and employees need the skills to present their findings in both oral and written forms.

    Results

    • The results of any project or procedure need to be action oriented. Students and employees need to make changes when there is a need for improvement. For example, if a copy machine has a paper jam, an inidividual must be able to take out the paper that is causing it and resume the job once the jam is cleared. Effective students and employees work toward results that will benefit all.
