How to Opt Out of CSAPS

CSAP, or the Colorado Student Assessment Program is used by the State of Colorado to assess student achievement and to develop state-wide standards for education. Schools value the data from the Colorado Student Assessment Program because it helps shape school programs and teacher instruction. However, there may come a time when you feel that your child doesn't benefit from norm-referenced testing. You may disapprove of standardized testing in general, or have personal reasons for not wishing to support CSAP. Should this occur, there is a way to opt out of CSAP, and it's fairly simple to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Draft or print out a letter stating your intent to opt out of CSAP for your child. You must state that you acknowledge and accept your parental right to opt your child out of CSAP and that you want to remove any records of CSAP testing from your child's file. Additionally, you may wish to provide your reasons for opting out of CSAP, but this is not required.

    • 2

Sign the letter and give it to your child's school administrator. It's important that you include any identifying information for your child, such as name, address and date of birth so that your child is not mistaken for another child at the same school with the same name. Also, it's important that you give the letter to the school administrator to prevent the letter from getting lost and your intent to opt-out ignored.

    • 3

Follow the correct procedures to excuse your child from school for several days during CSAP. If your child has not been excused, it is possible that their attendance record could be adversely affected and the absences will appear as unexcused. Calling ahead of time to excuse the absences will prevent miscommunication and frustration later.
