Contact your school's PTA president. Fewer than one in four schools, however, has it own PTA chapter, according to a 2004 article in "The Washington Post." If your school does not have its own chapter, you may join a PTA in your area that represents several schools.
Submit a membership application either on the National PTA's website, which is linked in the Resources section, or through the mail. With National PTA membership, you can vote in annual elections to fill offices as well as vote on changes to the organization's rules and official positions on a variety of topics. You also can vote for and run for a leadership position at the national level and even write and submit your own resolution on an educational issue of national importance, which could be introduced and voted on during the group's annual convention.
Pay annual membership dues. The national membership dues are $25 annually as of 2011. PTA chapter dues vary in amount but average about $10 per year as of 2011. As a member of your community's PTA, you can vote for and run for a leadership position in your local and/or state PTA and attend your state's annual PTA convention. You can attend regular meetings and help organize PTA-sponsored events.
