The Kansas City metropolitan area (encompassing both Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas) is home to a plethora of back-to-school activities each year. Whether you're looking for back-to-school fairs, free supplies or fun weekend activities, K.C. has got it. Most events are typically scheduled in late July or early August.
  1. KCK Back-to-School Fair

    • Residents of Kansas City, Kansas, can attend this free yearly event that provides free school supplies and a bevy of fun activities. According to the "Kansas City Kansan" newspaper, "Getting kids excited and ready for the start of a new school year is the focus of the event." In recent years more than 3,000 students have participated in the fair, which includes free health screenings and sports physicals in preparation for the new school year.

    Summit Fair Back-to-School Bash

    • Held in nearby Lee's Summit, Missouri, the Summit Fair Back-to-School Bash is a perfect opportunity for elementary age students to come together and have some fun. The events run Friday and Saturday in early August at the Summit Fair Shopping Center each year during Missouri's tax-free holiday weekend. The festivities include live art, child-friendly bands, face painters, magicians and several other activities, which are all free to the public.

    Back-to-School Celebration at the Oxford Schoolhouse

    • This yearly back-to-school celebration takes place in the suburbs of Johnson County, Kansas, in the city of Leawood. According to KansasCityEvents.org, "Children [are] able to make crafts, play games and help hand-crank homemade ice cream." In addition, local bands play free shows for the students and refreshments are provided at the historic Oxford one-room school. The festivities take place the last Saturday in August and run throughout the afternoon. All ages are welcome.

    Back-to-School Immunization Clinic

    • This event, organized by the Kansas City Missouri School District on several days in mid to late July, provides uninsured children with free vaccines needed before they start school in August. All children who qualify for the Vaccines for Children program will be given immunizations with no charge to parents. Several middle schools, elementary schools and high schools throughout the KCMO school district host the event at times in the morning, afternoon and evening.
