Brook Lane offers mental health services in individualized programs for all ages. The school was originally established to serve adults by the Mennonite Central Committee. In 1980 Brook Lane expanded to include adolescents. The mission of the school is to provide education and treatment that helps improve the behavioral and emotional well being of special education students. Some of its affiliations include the Maryland Association of Non-Public Special Education Facilities, Maryland Hospital Association and Maryland Association of Resources for Families and Youth.
The Arc of Washington County provides an Intensive Behavior Management Program (IBMP) that offers support services for developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors. It serves Washington, Carroll, Frederick, Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland. The professional staff includes licensed psychologists and psychology associates, crisis intervention specialists and master's level behavior consultants. The Arc also provides adult and children's residential services and support services for individuals and families.
Star Community, Inc. offers special education for children with various disabilities in a Christian atmosphere. The facilities include nine residences, indoor pool, fishing pond, nature trail, two greenhouses and an equestrian riding center. Services include day programs and residential programs, with a wide range of activities and participation in local events. The Ventures Program is designed to work with individuals to develop skills that will assist them in independent living.
Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC), located about 50 miles southeast of Hagerstown in Brookeville, is a private, nonprofit organization that offers direct services for adults and children with autism. Their Supported Employment Program gives autistic individuals the opportunity to work at one of more than 40 community locations such as The Home Depot, Todd Allen Printing, TJ Maxx and Shoppers Food Warehouse. There are two school locations and 52 community living residences operated by CSAAC. Other services include an early intervention home-based program, classroom-based preschool and an after-school program. Educational programs of the CSAAC Community School of Maryland are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. Instruction is given in the areas of academics, self-care, fine and gross motor skills, vocational skills, leisure skills, communication and interpersonal skills. Recreational activities are also offered and include swimming, 4-H gardening, movies, horseback riding and gymnastics.
