Turn off your child's television, cell phone, music player and computer until he completes all tasks that require him to focus. You must train your 6th grader to focus on one activity at a time to enhance his concentration and increase his performance.
Do not allow your 6th grader to hang out with friends, have visitors, play games or interact with siblings until her work is complete. Establish a set of ground rules that your child must abide by as he works on important tasks, and be sure to enforce them.
Allow short breaks during longer tasks. Focusing on one task for an extended time period can be mentally exhausting. Allow your child to grab a quick snack, stretch his legs, walk the dog or engage in any activity that does not require him to focus intensely for about fifteen minutes. Keep track of his break time and have him resume his task as soon as his time is up.
Keep in contact with his teachers. Let them know what you are doing at home to increase his focus and make suggestions that may help her to manage his focus in the classroom. Be open to accepting ideas from your child's teacher as well.
