Set up a regular routine at home for the evenings. Serve dinner at the same time every night. Designate a set amount of time after dinner for homework, and make a special homework area in the house. Set up a large calendar or planner to help your teen visualize when her assignments are due, and what she needs to work on each day.
Limit distractions during homework time. Turn off your teen's cellphone and limit computer access to school-related activities. Make sure your teen leaves the television and stereo off.
Be available to help your teen do his homework. Look for skills your teen is lacking, such as note-taking. Help your teen develop studying skills such as making flashcards and summarizing notes. Quiz your teen on material for upcoming tests.
Make sure your teen gets a good night's sleep on school nights. Set a regular bedtime and don't let your teen text or talk on the phone after a certain time in the evening. Limit time spent on the Internet after dinner.
Serve your teen a healthy breakfast in the morning. Avoid sugary foods, which tend to make blood sugar levels spike, leading to a quick crash in energy. Serve healthy foods with whole grains, protein and plenty of fruits.
