Choose a prewriting strategy. Before fourth graders even begin to write a sentence, they should choose a prewriting strategy to help them organize the essay. Numerous prewriting strategies exist to help students focus on the key components of their essay, including simple brainstorming and listing, word webs, story maps, or Venn diagrams for writing compare and contrast assignments.
Write the introduction on paper, using a pencil or pen, or on a computer. At this grade level, students probably have already been exposed to the concept of the "hook," or using an attention-grabber to begin their essays. Students also should focus on creating a simple thesis statement that summarizes the topic of their essay.
Write the body paragraphs. Depending on length requirements, students may be required to write only a one body paragraph, or they may be required to focus on creating the standard five paragraph essay. Whether the students need to write a one body paragraph or a three paragraph essay, they should focus on using their appropriate prewriting strategy to help them sort their information into an organized structure.
Write the conclusion. Even at this grade level, an essay needs a conclusion that restates and summarizes its major points. The conclusion should end with a compelling statement --- one that will capture the reader's attention.
Revise your draft. After the students have completed their first draft, they should reread, revise and edit it, as necessary. They should check for mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary usage. As they become more exposed to the writing process, students will begin to understand that revisions are an essential step. Some teachers incorporate peer editing or individual conferences into their writing assignments, as having a friend or a teacher review a writing assignment can help to improve the essay's clarity and quality.
Prepare to finalize the paper. Students should proofread their final document one more time and make necessary changes before submitting their work to their teacher.
