How to Create a Math Book Rubric

Rubrics are assessment tools for communicating expectations of quality. Educators provide rubrics to support student self-reflection and self-assessment. They also serve as communication between teacher and student. A rubric is a set of criteria and standards that should be linked to learning objectives. These should be used to assess or communicate about product, performance or process tasks. Using your math book, you can create a math rubric for your students' use.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a table with 6 columns and 7 rows. Hand-write it on a blank piece of paper to start, or type into a wordprocessing software application. Title it: "Math Rubric."

    • 2

Prepare the Criteria Section. Label each column 1 through 4, leaving the 1st and last columns blank. These columns represent levels from worst to best. The last column is for you to list the value that the student achieved in a particular criteria.

    • 3

Label each row as follows: Leave the first row blank, (1) Problem Solving, (2) Math Content, (3) Math Communications, (4) Presentation and (5) Use of Mathematical Terminology. Leave the last row blank for the total. Leave a space below the table for teacher's comments.
