How to Use Explicit Instructions in Kindergarten

Explicit instruction in kindergarten involves teaching children in a highly structured environment the specific skills they will need to learn new concepts. Teachers use explicit instruction to teach kindergarten students very specific tasks that have a definite purpose and outcome in learning. Explicit instruction is taught in small steps that young students can easily digest, and teachers use modeling and demonstration to introduce skills and knowledge to their kindergarten students.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the stage in your classroom for learning to take place. Have a special spot in your classroom, such as the carpet at the front of your room, for gathering students and discussing topics and introducing your students to learning new concepts.

    • 2

Make use of props and visual learning aids when teaching kindergarten students. When you read a story and introduce various characters, hold up the book for children to see the pictures and text. Use a whiteboard or Smart Board, which provides interaction for enhancing learning and interest and writing characters and words that children can see, as you explain the material to the class.

    • 3

Explain to kindergarten students what they will be learning in the particular lesson that day and what they will need to do if the lesson involves concepts, such as writing, coloring or using scissors and paste to make projects. Assemble the materials you will need for the lesson and demonstrate visually what the children will need to do to complete the project. Think out loud as you demonstrate to students new concepts. Be sure to check that the children understand the concepts and what they are expected to do throughout the lesson.

    • 4

Ask students to practice on their own the concept or project you have introduced, as you circulate through the classroom. Check to ensure that they understand and offer assistance with the project until they have mastered it on their own.

    • 5

Plan your instruction of kindergarten students from extensive teacher input to the point where kindergarteners are practicing concepts on their own and are working independently. Be sure to use the important steps of explicit instruction throughout the lesson (telling, showing and guiding) every time you teach kindergarten students.
