How to Teach Special Education Kids to Recognize Their Letters

Special education students easily become overwhelmed by unfamiliar letters in the English alphabet. Presenting the letters all at once is a critical mistake. Special ed children need time with each letter to recognize and retain them. The different levels of special needs students determine the length of time for each student's study. After the students learn each letter, it is important to expose them to the letters so they can recognize and identify them.

Instructions

    • 1

Print three letters on each sheet of card stock. Print two sets of all of the alphabet letters. One set in red and one set in black.

    • 2

Cut the red letters out so that each letter is in a 1 inch square. If you would like them to be more durable, you can laminate the red letter sheets and then cut them out.

    • 3

Lay a sheet with three black letters on the table. Hand the student the stack of red letter squares.

    • 4

Ask the student to spread the red letter squares on the table. The letters should all be facing the student and easy to read.

    • 5

Point to one of the black letters on the sheet. Ask the child to say the letter. Practice saying the letter with the child.

    • 6

Ask the child to find the red letter that matches the black letter. After they locate the matching letter, have them place it next to the black letter. Say the letter once again.

    • 7

Move to the next letter on the sheet and repeat steps 5 and 6. Repeat for the final letter on the sheet.
